PLANTING INSTRUCTIONS: (REFER TO MAP FOR PLANT DATES)Choosing the right site is essential for successfully planting food plots for ducks and other waterfowl. Since ducks and geese are naturally drawn to water and use it to find food, it’s important to locate your plot near a water source. Ducks are primarily herbivores, feeding on grasses, seeds, fruits, acorns, and aquatic plants, so areas where they already feed are ideal.
Position your plot close to the water's edge, preferably uphill. Areas where you can control water levels or places that commonly flood are ideal. Ducks favor shallow-water feeding zones (6 to 18 inches deep), so keep this in mind when selecting a site.
Preparing the soil thoroughly is crucial. Clear any debris, grasses, or weeds to help the seeds establish and grow properly. Focus on areas by water edges, lowlands, or flood-prone zones for optimal results. Avoid planting in spots prone to constant flooding until the plants are fully mature. To prepare, till the soil, sow the seeds, and lightly cover them by dragging or rolling. Once established and reaching 16-24 inches in height, the plants in this mixture can tolerate flooding. However, flooding too early in their growth will suffocate the plants. Aim to withhold water until the plants reach maturity (75-90 days), and then gradually reintroduce water.
